There is frustration and anger in the air. They are here to arrest Elizabeth due to the blame of being a witchcraft made by Abigail. The curtain draws, and people now have a look at act 3. John Proctor is seen convincing on one of the girls Mary Warren to acknowledge that they were faking the whole devil possession and witchcraft plot. She is then introduced to the court which is supervised by Hawthorne and Danforth— two judges who believe they cannot be cheated.

Mary reveals the reality, but that is again veiled by Abigail Williams who shows up with other girls. He then admits his love affair with Abby, but she denies the same clearly. A dozen members have been executed while Tituba, as well as, Rebecca Nurse await their turn. Elizabeth is in jail as well. Hysteria begins for Parris as Abigail runs away from his place along with all the savings of his life. He realizes that if much-loved citizens viz. Parris, in the company of Hale, convinces the convicts to confess and save themselves from the capital punishment. However, the prisoners choose not to lie. But John has some different views. As and when he nods to sign the confession, he is asked to involve others also to which he declines. Telling what seems to be a small lie can harm others more than it harms you. Being honest is better than people being killed over false accusations.

Foil characters in a story is a technique used to contrast characters. In the play Abigail Williams portrays herself as an innocent girl being afflicted by the devil. John Proctor realizes the only way to prove Abigail is a liar and dishonest is to confess.

So he confesses to to the court; Abigail denies this making Danforth confused. Elizabeth is an honest woman because an honest woman would never lie. In her life she has never lied…my wife cannot lie III, Abigail Williams portrays a dishonest harlot. Everyone is realizing Abigail is a dishonest harlot and cannot be trusted. The court is now seeing her for who she truly is. Abigail is a dishonest harlot because she constantly lies and commited adultery with John Proctor.

Elizabeth is a honest woman, she has never lied which makes her trustworthy. Telling a lie may not hurt you but it may hurt others.
